THE FINALS OF THE KORDA BRITISH CARP ANGLING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2007
This year the finals returns to the Carp Societies magnificent Horseshoe lake in Gloucestershire, the venue that hosted the first two championships finals. With the new centre of excellence and club house on site and the fantastic fishing that’s on offer at Horseshoe, it seems only fitting that the top carp angling event at the country should be hosted at the top events venue in the country.
The finals takes place on the 7 – 9th September and full info about what’s going on alongside the finals will be released through the press and on this site as information becomes available.
Judgment day is nigh and this weekend sees the finals of the newly formatted British Carp Angling Championships. With the runners and riders having qualified through two matches already to get this far it really is the cream of British competition carp anglers that will be battling it out at Horseshoe in an attempt to steal the crown from last years champs Will and Dan O Flynn. This year, as well as the title that everyone wants to win, the prize fund has been increased. First place nets £10,000, second gets £3000 and third gets £2000 and the biggest fish of the tournament grabs a grands worth of fantastic VentureCarp tackle.
As is usual with the BCAC the final venue changes every two years and this year sees a return a venue that has been referred to as the “Wembley of Carp Fishing”, the incredible Carp Society run Horseshoe Lake in Gloucestershire. The first two finals of the BCAC were held here back in 1999 and 200 but this year just 16 pairs take to the stage giving everyone more room to display their angling skill.
The Host VenueWith a tournament that has the pedigree of the BCAC the it is only proper that the venue that hosts the finals can match it calibre and Horseshoe is very much a jewel in the crown of UK carp fishing. Horseshoe has always been a popular venue for competitions, and over the last few years, under the control of David Mannell at The Carp Society, the whole site at Lechlade has been developed into a centre of carp angling excellence. With the impressive new clubhouse that was finished last year, and the awesome carp that the lake is so famous for, Horseshoe is a brilliant venue for the finals. With just 16 pairs battling it out everyone will have loads of space to prove their ability and you can expect some hearty battles and some impressive fish being caught. As it’s name suggests, the lake is shaped like a Horseshoe with two large bays running off a headland. The summer bay is the shallower of the two and the winter bay is slightly wider and deeper. In 1999 Andy Murray and Keith Napier won the inaugural event from the winter bay and then in 2000 Tim Fromant and Mike Winstone took the title from the summer bay. Where it will be won from this year is difficult to predict and with the calibre of anglers taking part any one of them could take the crown from any of the swims.
The Line Up
This years line up sees a mix of some very capable anglers aiming for the top slot. As previously mentioned the pairings have already qualified through two events so their capability is not in question, but when you add into the mix that there is a good number of podium finishers in the race the event is going to be an exciting one. There are reigning title holders the O’ Flynns plus Lee Jackson and Gary Peet (2001 Champs), Ben and Barry O Connor (2nd in 2006 and 3rd in 2004) plus the Blackpool Tigers Pete Holehouse and Ian Huntington (2nd in 1999, Mainline boys Rob Marsh and Lee Merritt (3rd 2006) and a number of other players who have been up their with the best of them at various stages over the last 8 years. In addition to the podium high flyers this year has seen a whole host of new faces come into the competition arena and qualify through so if some of the names are not immediately obvious don’t be under any illusions that they are not capable of dominating the event. This year more than ever it is very difficult to predict who will win and only time and skill will be the judge.
Come Along and See The Action.
If you would like to witness the biggest battle in UK carp fishing taking place then Horseshoe is open to the public. Visitors are allowed access around the lake during the day light hours but cannot stay on the competition stretches during the hours of darkness but there is a bivvy area for you to stay over if you want to. There will be a bar on site and food will be served throughout. A small charge will be levied for entry with all proceeds going to The Carp Society.
