Hewitt and Kemp winners at EveshamThe hooter hooted the start of our first visit to Evesham and what a start it was as Dave Gawthorn set another British Champs record with the fastest fish in history.  Nineteen seconds was the time it took for double champ Dave to put the fish on the bank on the float and it will go down as the fastest carp ever to be caught in the BCAC.  The fast and  frantic fishing continued through the day so by 6pm on the first day the 1,2,3 was Dave Gawthorn and Bryan Jarrett on 36.12oz, Paul Chidlow and Jon Menage on 34.15 and Kev Hewitt and Cliff Kemp on 32.12oz. The race for the last places in the semi was well and truly on. The action and a steady flow of carp continued  and Pro-Plus and Red Bull seemed to be on the shopping list.

By the morning Kev Hewitt and Cliff Kemp had taken on the challenge and had amassed a small lead over the rest with 121.12oz. Some way behind were Paul Chidlow and Jon “The Tapster” Menage on 85.15 and two times champions Bryan Jarrett and Dave Gawthorn held third on 83.00oz.

Russell Summers and Nathan Highley hit back with an awesome display of surface angling. They had got a few carp going on the end of the wind and within a few hours had the leaders sweating. At times the lads had two carp on at the same time, and back at the middle of the lake the action wasn’t as frantic but a steady flow of carp kept the challenge going. By the 6pm check Russell Summers and  Nathan Highley had taken Evesham by the scruff of it’s neck and had catapulted themselves into first place with an impressive 232.13 . Jarrett and Gawthorn had moved up a place with a total of 200.01 and very closely followed by Chidlow and Menage on 199.03.

The gamble now was to stay awake for the night and Chidlow / Menage and Hewitt / Kemp opted to do just that and keep the pressure on Summers / Highley and Jarrett / Gawthorn. This move proved to be crucial

9am on the last day of this years eliminators saw a dramatic change on the leader board. Summers / Highley still had a grasp on the first place position with 355.01 followed now by Hewitt and Kemp on 329.12 but the battle for 3rd place was reaching a dramatic end. Would two times champions Jarrett and Gawthorn make it through or will the chance of competing for their third title be ripped away from them by the lads from Shropshire as there was only a matter of a few pounds between them.

The frantic speed fishing continued right up to the hooter and everyone wanted to know what the weights were and who had made it through, and after the results had been calculated correctly the scores  showed that Hewitt / Kemp had finished first just 5lbs ahead of Summers / Higley on 447.04 against 442.03 and the shock was the former champs had been defeated by the Shropshire dark horses Menage / Chidlow who amassed 337.03
