Berners Hall
We return to Essex syndicate water Berners Hall again for 2006 but this time in April were some very good weights can be expected if the weather holds out. A prolific
doubles reservoir that holds fish to over 30, Berners is a good bet for bag anglers. Slightly deeper than your usual waters and crystal clear it’s a venue that responds well to accurate angling.

Pre-Match
Berners Hall first came to light a few years ago when, under the watchful eye of well known and likeable Essex boy Steven Hayes, the water joined his Lily Fisheries portfolio. Since then it has been stocked with some lovely carp from the Walthamstow complex and also Mark Simmonds. Being quite clear the fish have taken on that deep dark chestnut colour that makes carp look so good and there are a number of scaly creatures in the lake that are worthy of a picky in anyone’s album. The lake is an irrigation reservoir that is generally quite deep and it responds well to accurate spodding and also, if the weather is good which it is scheduled to be for round 2, the fish love a zig. It was the RAF Team of Reg Verney and Glen Beardsall who won last year’s event with a total of 157.13 but the weather was not conducive to big weights. This year could well be very different so keep your eyes on the high flyers and let’s see if they can make it two in a row.
Match Report
The middle of the lake is the favoured area at Berners as it controls a lot of water and the Lily Fisheries team of Cliff Kemp and 2000 BCAC Champion Tim Fromant shot in there with glee after a good draw. These boys are a quality outfit and know the score but by tea time there had been just 1 fish landed at 14.07 for Dave Muller putting him and Graham Slaughter in the lead for Carp Bile / Golden B. Other than that it was quiet all round the pond and even stevens for the rest of the field. By morning there had been a few more fish caught and four teams were on the board. Leading the way was Fromant / Kemp with 4 fish for a weight of 60.13 and in second were the early leaders Slaughter / Muller who added another to their total to make 38.09. Third was Paul Butler and Paul Sharman with 1 fish for 14.15 and really it could still be anyone’s game.
To date no one has unlocked the secret of success at Berners but that would soon change. The lake went flat calm, the sun came up and the clever anglers expected the fish to move up in the water so the zigs were dusted off. One particular pairing stood out as outstanding in their judgment as they were the only one’s to take real advantage of the situation. In an incredible display of angling which caused them to reel two rods in at one stage as they couldn’t keep up with the amount of fish they were catching, Fromant / Kemp landed 26 fish for a new Berners match record of 375.15. There were fish all over the road bank but no one seemed to make the most of their presence and other than the on fire Fromant / Kemp. The night proved to be quiet all round and it was only Fromant / Kemp that could catch despite there being a lot of fish in front of a number of the other anglers. By 2.30am the leaders felt they had caught enough and reeled in for some much needed sleep and by the dawn score check they were clearly miles ahead with 418.13. The rest of the field was much tighter as non one else was catching and the top three still stayed the same. With third only on 14.07 there was still a chance for anyone. That chance didn’t materialize and at close of play it was Fromant / Kemp who absolutely dominated it with 437.04 ahead of Slaughter / Muller on 38.09 and Butler / Sharman on 14.07.
